MOGEES, which uses "realtime gesture recognition with contact microphones," is a recent technology that could have interesting applications for audio performance among other sound design situations.

According to the developers, MOGEES utilizes:

physic modelling, which consists in generating the sound by simulating physical laws;

- concatenative synthesis (audio mosaicing), in which the sound of the contact microphone is associated with its closest frame present in a sound database.

This basically means that the microphone senses a vibration and turns that vibration into a waveform which a computer can turn into a sound, or trigger another sound (similar to MIDI).

Radiohead: "The Daily Mail"

"The Daily Mail" was originally written/recorded for the "TKoL" sessions but never made the record. I have to say, I like this song probably more than any song on that studio record. As a matter of fact, the particular above recording came from TKoL "Live From the Basement" sessions which I enjoy as a whole more than the "TKoL" studio LP. Radiohead are at their best when they can add a touch of organic-ness, or less produced sound to their mix- the "...From the Basement" session does exactly that. The production, especially for a live recording, is stellar (amazingly stellar) but the mix still retains some sonic naturalness which is crucial.

For me, these guys have been more miss than hit over the last five years, but I keep coming back to this one, mainly because it departs from the sex-funk deal and harks back to various elements of psych music- which is what oM does well. There are multiple movements here, but each transition makes sense and doesn't take away from the section which preceded. I especially enjoy the meandering ambient stretch which comes in around 2/3 of the way through.

Check out "Wintered Debts," the first single off Paralytic Stalks which is out in early February.

"Tiny Giant" is a documentary about Jeff Steinberg, a gospel music singer born without arms and with other physical ailments. Jeff's story is intriguing to me not only because of his unique situation but because I know very little about gospel music except what I have seen in late 1970's black and white - early 1980's over saturated color footage of performances...where gospel music church culture may have peaked if you will. It will be interesting to me to see if, in addition to telling the story of Jeff overcoming his adversity, the doc mentions how the perception crowds have of him and how the overall art he is a part of has changed over his 30+ year career.

Ah, nice! So there may be a downside to being "unique"? From this piece it sounds like research is ramping up regarding the study of the correlation between 'left-handedness' and certain brain disorders such as bipolarism, ADHD, schizophrenia and many more exciting flaws. 'Mixed-handedness' is of particular interest to researchers as rates for certain disorders seem to be higher in this group. I don't feel so special anymore. (Or maybe I should feel more special?)

The term 'noise' in itself has a definition, but in practice and in interpretation, it can't be pinned down uniformly across every set of ears. I'm not that into 'noise' music per se, but then again maybe I am...depending on how certain sounds I enjoy are interpreted. If anything, there is something to be said about the theory, culture and practice of the noise music (total oxymoron) community.

I suppose I find this interesting because it is rare that I mail an actual piece of mail and when I do, every time, I wonder how it gets to where it's going considering my handwriting isn't stellar which means that, playing the odds (reality) game, there are waaaaaaay worse examples of penmanship out there. To this day, I just assumed it was a completely human routing system (which a big part of it actually is) probably because I used to have this same concern when I mailed a letter as a kid...when technology didn't exist as it does today.

Processing plant where 36,000 letters are scanned per hour.

Images of indecipherable letters are sent to an encoding center ("...a big windowless room") where people try to de-code unrecognizable addresses - This is what these people do all day.

Mail that these poor souls can't decipher is then routed to the 'Peak and Poke Clerk' (sweet title) who is the last line of defense against the dreaded:

DEAD LETTER OFFICE.

This is an interesting idea from a duo calling themselves Bluebrain where they have created two apps, one for the National Mall in DC and another for Central Park in NYC, that utilize your phone's gps to relate your geographic location to a section of original music that they have composed. The group essentially mapped out regions of each park and put music to each zone which will change as the listener moves along the different geographic locations. I made a point to try out the Central Park version and it is an interesting experience (Although I was a tad skeptical at first because I wasn't sure if I wanted someone telling me how to have an experience.). I also wanted to figure out a bit on how the app changes between regions, how the mix is effected and what may happen if one stands in one place for a bit of time. The music changes between regions subtly where one piece gently gives way to another which appears at first low in the mix. If you stand in one place, the music is designed to loop, but not noticeably. The app is free, so if anything else, it's a good excuse to get to the park - if that excuse was really needed.

I visited the "Occupy Wall Street" protest today in Liberty Plaza and left with no more of a sense of the movement's purpose as when I arrived (I only had a vague idea of what the protest was attempting to accomplish before this afternoon.). A key problem I see is that the message is too diffuse and not focused enough and is generally centered on money and how policy has handled wealth leading up to and after the financial collapse. I am not sure what the group intends the endpoint to be but it appears that it will mostly be awareness (probably no actual policy change). To me, the most interesting aspect of all of this is how social media and technology has shaped organized gatherings for cause - O.W.S. began and continues to survive through a large online presence, not dissimilar to the successful Arab Spring revolution (just not as radical).

Not that Real Estate's first record, Real Estate, was bad- It certainly wasn't. I do however find it boring. The entire record leans on lazy summer guitar lines styled on heavy nostalgia reverb and the tone of each song seems to match that of every other track on the record. I've heard two cuts from the new LP, Days, (Domino, 10/18) and I'm excited. The new songs are varied and have more substance and emotion than I could find on the entire first record. I was listening to a Jason Lytle interview today on the BBC and he got to choose his exit song - 10cc "I'm Not in Love" - saying that this will be one of the most important songs to him, probably until the time he dies. Naturally I wanted to pay pretty close attention to it. I've heard this song on far away radios, or maybe on a TV in another room or something, but I've never actually LISTENED to the track. The recording methods are pretty experimental and the vocal layering technique creates a pretty rad choral effect. I assumed the band recorded their own vocal samples and triggered them with a MIDI keyboard...not the case.

I went in to this thinking it would be an experimental, abstraction of string based sound but it was hardly that. The performance consisted of around 30 minutes (split up into maybe 5 pieces) of emotive violin/cello/viola sections, upright base, churning electric base and steady drum lines. Nice space, good stuff.

The Creators Project asked J. Spaceman and Jonathan Glazer to put together a sound installation, re-interpreting one of my most favorite songs: "Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating in Space" for Coachella. From The Creators Project:

The duo are creating a physical manifestation of the Spiritualized track “Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating in Space.” In a cathedral-like space, designed by Graft Architects, isolated pools of light will appear, each containing a different component of the original track.

William Basinski @ Other Music - 03/24/11

I was lucky enough to check out William Basinski improvising on 30 year old analog tape loops...this is ambient music, but to me, the way Basinski arrives at the final sound is the most intriguing part of the experience. Each piece of tape has it's own story and comes to it's own conclusion...perhaps differently each time.

E6 Holiday Surprise Tour @ the Knitting Factory - 03/22/11

Members of Olivia Tremor Control, Circulatory System, Elf Power, The Late BP Helium, the Gerbils and other E6 affiliates played a ramshackle 3.5 hour set in Brooklyn Tuesday. There were sing alongs, chants, horns, a giant snowman, stories and a magic piano playing castle amongst other things (Jeff Mangum....who did not play). The video above would be of Julian Koster backing up the magic piano playing castle with a saw...the jam is, like, Romanian or something. This all reminded me what a weird place Athens, Ga is - music meant to be played on 100 year old creaky wood floorboards.
