I visited the "Occupy Wall Street" protest today in Liberty Plaza and left with no more of a sense of the movement's purpose as when I arrived (I only had a vague idea of what the protest was attempting to accomplish before this afternoon.). A key problem I see is that the message is too diffuse and not focused enough and is generally centered on money and how policy has handled wealth leading up to and after the financial collapse. I am not sure what the group intends the endpoint to be but it appears that it will mostly be awareness (probably no actual policy change). To me, the most interesting aspect of all of this is how social media and technology has shaped organized gatherings for cause - O.W.S. began and continues to survive through a large online presence, not dissimilar to the successful Arab Spring revolution (just not as radical).

The Innovator's Cookbook
This seems like a pretty essential read, not only as an application for business but as inspiration for identifying and putting a path forward together to achieve personal goals.

"Visual Acoustics"
Visual Acoustics is a documentary chronicling architecture photographer Julius Shulman's work and his importance in shaping how we view the modernist period of architectural distinction as he returns to the sites of some of his most recognized work. It seems this one is on the festival circuit now, but here's to a release sometime in the near future.

Johan Rijpma: “Tape Generations”
Tape Generations from johan rijpma on Vimeo.
Everything that I've read about Johan Rijpma's "Tape Generations" is a commentary on the visuals, and rightly so, they're great. More stunning to me, however, is the sound Rijpma gets to supplement the picture - It's amazingly crisp, interesting and mesmerizing at the same time. Check this one out with headphones.
Real Estate: "Green Aisles" and "It's Real"
Not that Real Estate's first record, Real Estate, was bad- It certainly wasn't. I do however find it boring. The entire record leans on lazy summer guitar lines styled on heavy nostalgia reverb and the tone of each song seems to match that of every other track on the record. I've heard two cuts from the new LP, Days, (Domino, 10/18) and I'm excited. The new songs are varied and have more substance and emotion than I could find on the entire first record. Check out "Green Aisles"and "It's Real" below.

Cass McCombs: "The Same Thing"
This guy is churning them out - 2011: One sad album..and now possibly an upbeat one (at least sonically). Check out the supremely good first single off Humor Risk, out in November.
